Skin conditions caused by infection from a fungus, parasite, virus or bacteria.
What is it?
Your skin serves as a powerful shield against the external environment. Sometimes, this shield is compromised, causing your skin to be susceptible to various bacterial, yeast, fungal, viral, or parasitic infections. These infections can also occur in your hair and nails.
Bacterial infections may manifest as tiny red pustules on skin, or larger, more tender nodules. Yeast infections could result in inflammation in skin folds, or beneath your nails. Fungal infections may present as athlete's foot, jock itch, or lead to thickened and distorted nails. Many infections are accompanied by painful areas on the skin. Skin infections often resolve on their own, but if they persist, we can help.
Most skin infections respond promptly to treatment. Keep in mind it is essential to get an accurate diagnosis for your infection since treatments are often specific to the type of infection.
How is it treated?
To ensure you get the right diagnosis, schedule a visit with a board-certified provider in one of our Dublin, Grove City or Springfield, Ohio offices. Your provider will conduct a physical exam, ask about your symptoms and, if needed, take a skin culture to identify the type of infection.
Based on your specific type of skin infection, we'll prescribe the appropriate antibiotics, antiviral, antifungal and antiparasitic medications. When applied as directed, these treatments are highly effective for most infections.
