Itchy, red blotches on the skin typically caused by an allergic reaction.
What is it?
Urticaria, commonly referred to as hives, is a prevalent skin issue marked by itchy, red blotches of varying sizes, which can emerge anywhere on the body. Usually an allergic reaction, it can be triggered by numerous factors such as food, drugs, insect stings or stress. The rash often fades within 24 hours, but new ones may develop, giving the impression that the condition is persisting or migrating throughout the body. If your hives lasts for more than six weeks it can be an indicator of a more serious underlying health issue.
How is it treated?
If our board-certified dermatologists diagnose you with hives, they can treat your immediate symptoms and also help you avoid triggers to prevent future outbreaks. Common treatments to reduce symptoms include antihistamines, corticosteroids or other anti-inflammatory drugs to ease the itching and swelling.
Working closely with you, our team can help pinpoint the root cause of your hives so you can avoid exposure in the future, warding off future flare-ups. If your hives are indicative of a more serious illness, our dermatologists can assist in detecting and treating that as well. While Urticaria can cause discomfort and anxiety, with the proper dermatological attention, it can be effectively managed and regulated.
