Small, flesh-colored lumps appearing on the genitals that is caused by sexual transmission of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
What is it?
Genital warts are caused by a sexually transmitted disease (STD) triggered by certain strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The warts typically manifest as tiny, flesh-colored lumps or clusters in the genital region, although they might not be instantly notiicable. Genital warts are prevalent and impact all genders. Unmanaged genital warts are contagious through skin-to-skin contact.
While genital warts can cause discomfort or anxiety due to their location and appearance, they are not typically harmful or a cause of concern. They can, however, cause discomfort or pain, and in some instances, can lead to complications during pregnancy.
How is it treated?
Treatment options help alleviate symptoms and aid in the removal of visible warts. They may include topical treatments, cryotherapy (freezing) or in some situations, minor surgical procedures. While there is no cure for the HPV virus itself, these treatments can control the external symptoms and prevent further transmission.
In addition to providing treatment, our dermatologists can offer advice on prevention strategies, such as HPV vaccination, and provide guidance on how to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to partners. If you suspect you have genital warts, our dermatologists can confirm a diagnosis and guide you on next steps.
