A rough scaly patch, bump or reddish spot on areas of the skin often exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, neck, hands and forearms.
What is it?
Actinic keratosis is one of the most frequently seen skin disorders we handle at Buckeye Dermatology. Also referred to as solar keratosis, this condition stems from extended exposure to the sun, tanning beds, or sunlamps. Actinic keratosis presents as a precancerous skin growth, appearing as red, pink, or brown spots on the skin's surface. These spots typically show up in sun-exposed parts of the body such as the face, lips, ears, neck, hands, arms and shoulders. It's a common condition, usually affecting adults due to long-term exposure to UV light. By reducing your sun exposure and safeguarding your skin from UV rays, you can decrease your risk of developing actinic keratosis. Sun damage can happen all year round, therefore, we recommend using SPF 30+ sunscreen and limiting your time under those harmful rays.
How is it treated?
If actinic keratoses are not addressed, they might progress into a type of skin cancer known as squamous cell carcinoma. Our highly qualified, doctor-led team will examine any concerning areas on your skin and recommend a proper treatment plan. We routinely remove actinic keratoses via topical medication cream, gel, or cryotherapy. Book an appointment today at one of our clinics in Springfield, Grove City, or Dublin, Ohio if you notice a new or changed spot on your skin.
